Photographs collected by Ellery Sedgwick, editor of the Atlantic Monthly from 1908-1938, for his work with the magazine. Many of the photographs are portraits and snapshots of various authors who contributed to the magazine and corresponded with Sedgwick, including William Beebe, James Norman Hall, Charles Nordhoff, and many others. There are also photographs of the life and writing of Opal S. Whiteley, whose controversial diary was published by the Atlantic Monthly in 1920, and of forged Abraham Lincoln correspondence that writer Wilma Frances Minor attempted to have published in the magazine in 1928-1929. Most of the photographers in this collection are unidentified.

Opal Stanley Whiteley was born on December 11, 1897 in Colton, Washington and later moved with her family to Walden, Oregon, near the town of Cottage Grove.
